MTV VMAs: P!nk’s mesmerizing medley and tear jerking acceptance speech

Pop and R&B star P!nk gives an emotional speech while accepting the Vanguard Award at MTV’s Video Music Awards.

This year’s Michael Jackson Vanguard Award was received by singer and songwriter P!nk (Pink). The award, similar to a lifetime achievement award, is presented to musicians and/or directors commending their accomplishments at MTV’s Video Music Awards.

Pink is best known for her strong personality, filter-less lyrics and unique pop-rock style. In her career, she has snatched three Grammy Awards along with seven MTV VMA moon-men. In 2009, Billboard named Pink ‘Pop Song Artist of the Decade’ and ‘Woman of the Year’in 2013. Her performance tonight included a medley of smash hit records “Get the Party Started,” “Raise Your Glass,” “So What,” “Blow Me,” “__ Perfect,” “Just Give Me a Reason,” and more.

After killing the stage for about seven straight minutes, the singer accepted her award by sharing a personal experience with the audience and viewers. Pink revealed a conversation she had with her six year old daughter about self-esteem. “Mama, I’m the ugliest girl I know,” exclaimed the young girl, “I look like a boy with long hair.” Pink dealt with the situation by presenting her daughter a PowerPoint of musical legends –such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Elton John, George Michael–who were bullied and made fun of every day. “We don’t change—we take the gravel in the shell and make a pearl,” the singer stated as she began to end her inspirational story.

“We help other people to change to see more kinds of beauty. Thank you for being your true selves and lighting the way for us,” she continued, paying homage to musical icons who embraced their uniqueness despite the judgment of others.”
